A Sonnet a Day, to Shorten the Time, to Make for Play

For myself, writing sonnets is a joy,
to string words lyric in natural toned verse,
this art is mine, not some high-school teacher ploy
these words are my tools, this meter: my turf.
I will set in stone my hereafter goal:
to string words lyric in this pent meter
every rise and setting, learning my role
as writer. In this way I'll give readers
who are just looking for a spot of fun,
a short, sharp, bit of English language play.
We'll break rules, and make them up, for a pun
This is English people! where the rules don't stay!
Though this meter may be weighed down with age
I yet feel freed by this, my iambic cage.
